Writing the Parish History of Reculver

by Dr David Wright (supported by images supplied by Mike Bundock)

The venerable north Kent coast site of Reculver, unlike many places, has a recorded history stretching back well before Domesday. The talk reflects a work-in-progress and the writer's investigations into the Roman invasion; the Saxon Shore and Roman forts; the Benedictine monastery founded within the fort walls in AD 669; and a thousand years of subsequent events culminating in the gradual collapsing of the cliffs and loss of much of the fort, and the final shameful destruction of the venerable Anglo-Saxon church in the early 1800s
