War Memorial Project

The project was initiated by our late President John Fishpool who had a great interest in both the World Wars and their impact on Herne Bay. The purpose of this project is to collate information for addition to the HBHRS website, library and then other repositories as appropriate. To make the fruits of the research available to interested parties with the specific aims being to record the names on various War Memorials in the town and surrounding area and to research each of the names and add as much biographical information as reasonably possible.

Herne Bay War Memorial

The memorial unveiling ceremony took place at 2.15pm on Armistice Day 11th November 1922, performed by General Sir Charles Warren. The obelisk was given as a war memorial by F.G. Hoskins the cost being defrayed by voluntary subscriptions. It bears the county and town arms together with details of the unveiling and the names of the fallen from the Herne Bay area.

There are three hundred and fifty three names inscribed on the Herne Bay War Memorial, which is situated in the War Memorial Park.
