Herne Bay's Pleasure Boats

A “trip around the bay” in a pleasure boat was once once a popular activity for holidaymakers at the seaside. Boatman at Herne Bay began to acquire craft, which had engines installed for “tripping”, as the trade was known, soon after the First World War. They were a major attraction during the heyday of the English holiday scene.

In this book author Roger Turner tells the story of Herne Bay’s proud fleet of wooden pleasure boats – at one time there were over 50- and the local colourful characters who once operated them.Illustrated by many images taken from the author’s own personal collection and augmented by his own detailed knowledge of the trade gathered over 65 years+ in both boating and fishing professionally, this book relates the fascinating history of a once vibrant local trade and its associated families which is now largely forgotten.
